On April 17, 1961, 1,400 armed anti-Castro exiles landed on Cuban shores at the Bay of Pigs. Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev, remembering promises U.S. President John F. Kennedy made during his presidential campaign to aid Cuban exiles, accused Kennedy of orchestrating the invasion. However, Castro's military easily warded off the counterrevolutionaries, bringing a serious blow to the anti-Castro movement. Hear American Ambassador Adlai Stevenson comment on the Bay of Pigs Invasion.
